In a recent fan Q&A session, legendary Queen guitarist Brian May reflected back on the challenging early days of the band and some anxious moments with late singer Freddie Mercury. While Mercury was trying to find his voice while honing his stage presence, May admits that the other members of the band were wondering if they made the correct choice for lead singer of the group. “When we first worked with him, it was a little unnerving,” May admitted. “Because he did a lot of running around the place and screaming his head off. So we thought, ‘Is this going work?’” May disclosed that audiences didn’t care much for Mercury in those early days, but Freddie soon found his footing on stage and in the studio.. “A lot of people found him kind of abrasive – but they all thought he was interesting and entertaining,” May said. “At that point, though, he wasn’t the singer that we all got to know as Freddie Mercury.” (Ultimate Classic Rock)
